Gutters are only as
good as the wood.
Your gutters hang on the fascia. When a failing gutter rots that board out, we repair the wood first, then hang the system back on something solid. No gutter goes back on rot.
The fascia is the board your gutters are screwed to; the soffit is the vented panel that closes in the underside of the eave. When a gutter overflows or leaks at the back, it soaks the fascia, and over a few New England seasons that wood softens and rots. Once it is soft, the gutter has nothing solid to hold, and it starts pulling off the house.
We repair or replace the rotted wood, keep the soffit venting intact, and rehang the gutters on sound board. Gutter Giant's own guidance puts a small repair at roughly $300 to $800 and a larger job in the $1,000 to $3,000 range, with a firm number after we see it.
Fascia and soffit, plainly
These two get lumped together because they finish the same part of the roof, but they do different jobs.
| Part | Where it is | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Fascia | The vertical board along the roof edge | Closes the roof edge and carries the gutters |
| Soffit | The horizontal panel underneath the eave | Closes in the underside and vents the attic |
How a bad gutter rots them
This is why fascia work and gutter work almost always come together. A gutter that overflows the back edge, or leaks at a seam, runs water down the exact board it is mounted to. In New Hampshire that board goes through wet-dry and freeze-thaw for months, and it does not take long to soften. Here is the chain, and where it ends up if nobody stops it.
| It starts as | Which becomes |
|---|---|
| Overflow or a back-edge leak | A constantly wet fascia board |
| Wet wood through the seasons | Soft, rotting fascia |
| Soft fascia | Gutters pulling loose and sagging |
| Water behind the fascia | Rotted soffit and a way in for pests |
| Rot left long enough | Damage to the roof decking and rafter tails |
Signs of fascia or soffit damage
- Peeling paint or dark stains on the board behind or below the gutter.
- Soft or spongy wood you can push a screwdriver into.
- Gutters sagging or pulling away where the fascia has given.
- Gaps or holes in the soffit, often where birds or squirrels have gotten in.
- Daylight or drafts visible in the eave from inside the attic.
What we do
We fix the wood, not just the surface. If a gutter caused it, we deal with the gutter too, so it does not happen again.
| Work | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Fascia repair or replacement | Cut out the rot, replace with sound board, prime and paint to match |
| Soffit repair | Replace damaged panels and close the gaps pests use |
| Keep it vented | Preserve or restore soffit venting so the attic still breathes |
| Rehang the gutters | Mount the system back on solid wood with proper hangers |
| Fix the cause | Correct the overflow or leak that soaked the wood in the first place |
Why venting the soffit matters here
Soffit isn't decoration. It's how your attic breathes. Vented soffit lets cool outside air in low, which keeps the roof deck cold and even and helps break the melt-and-refreeze cycle behind ice dams. When we close in a soffit during a repair we keep it vented, because sealing it up tight trades a rot problem for an attic-moisture problem, and in a New Hampshire winter that is a bad trade.
What it costs
Fascia and soffit are priced by how much wood is damaged and how hard it is to reach. Gutter Giant's own guidance puts the ranges like this, and we give you a firm number after we actually see the damage, because rot has a way of going further than it looks from the ground.
| Scope | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Small, localized repair | roughly $300–$800 |
| Longer runs or multiple sides | $1,000–$3,000 |
| Damage into decking or rafters | More, quoted after inspection |
Ranges above reflect Gutter Giant’s own published cost guidance; they are typical, not a quote. Your exact price is set at the free on-site estimate.
Fascia and soffit questions.
What are fascia and soffit?+
The fascia is the flat board that runs along the roof edge, the one your gutters are actually screwed to. The soffit is the underside panel that closes in the eave between the fascia and the wall, and it is usually vented to let the attic breathe. Together they finish the roof edge and hold the gutter system up.
Why do my gutters rot the fascia?+
A gutter that overflows or leaks at the back runs water straight down the fascia it is mounted to. Over a few New England seasons that wood stays wet, softens, and rots, and once the fascia is soft the gutter has nothing solid to hold to and starts pulling away. That is why fascia repair and gutter work almost always go together.
Do you replace soffit as well as fascia?+
Yes. Water that rots the fascia often gets behind it into the soffit, so we check both. We replace the damaged boards and panels, keep the venting intact so the attic still breathes, and make it match the rest of the trim.
Why does soffit ventilation matter in winter?+
Vented soffit lets cool air into the attic, which keeps the roof deck cold and even. That is one of the things that stops the melt-and-refreeze cycle behind ice dams. If we close in a soffit during a repair, we keep it vented, because blocking that airflow trades one moisture problem for another.
How much does fascia and soffit repair cost?+
Gutter Giant's own guidance puts a small, localized fascia or soffit repair at roughly $300 to $800, and a larger job, longer runs, the gutter attachment area, or multiple sides of the home, in the $1,000 to $3,000 range. Damage that has reached the roof decking or rafters costs more. We give you a firm number after we see it.
Will the new fascia and soffit match my existing trim?+
Yes. We replace the damaged boards and panels, then prime and paint to match the rest of your trim, and we keep the soffit venting intact so the eave still looks and works right. The goal is that the repair blends in, not stands out.
